SCHOOL BUS SAFETY

IT IS ILLEGAL TO PASS A SCHOOL BUS
WHEN THE RED LIGHTS ARE FLASHING

5 POINT VIOLATION

School buses are equipped with yellow (or amber) lights and red flashing lights.  The yellow lights go on before the bus stops and the red lights go on when the bus has stopped.  This means the bus will be picking up or discharging children.

When a school bus has the red lights flashing, vehicles approaching from all directions must stop at least 25 feet from the bus.  The only exception is on a divided highway, with a raised median or safety island.  The vehicles approaching from the opposite direction must
slow to 10 mph.

Examples in the region are:
the Black Horse Pike in Mays Landing
Route 30 in Absecon
the Boulevards in Vineland
Dune Drive in Avalon and Stone Harbor

Motorists may proceed only after the lights have been turned off.

The Law:

It is illegal to pass a school bus with flashing red lights.

Penalties:

  • fine between $100-$250
  • five (5) points on driving record
  • imprisonment and/or community service
  • possible license revocation
