MOTORCYCLE SAFETY

In New Jersey, motorcyclists have the same rights and responsibilities as a motor vehicle.

Motorists should:

- Be alert for motorcycles – they can be difficult to see on the roadway
- Anticipate hazards for motorcycles and be prepared to react
- Maintain a safe following distance

Motorcyclists should:

- Wear a helmet – NJ Law requires motorcyclists to wear a DOT approved helmet
- Assume motorists do not see them
- Plan an escape using the What If strategy
- Make yourself visible – wear bright colored or reflective clothing
- Maintain a safe following distance
- Look for hazards and react accordingly

New Jersey Statutes

39:3-76.5 Failure to equip motorcycle with footrests and helmet for passengers    $80
39:3-76.7 to 76.10 Motorcycle helmet, goggles and other safety equip violations $54
39:3-76.3 Motorcycle handle bar grips too high $54
39:3-76.4 Failure to equip motorcycle with special muffler system $54
