MVC DISCONTINUES LICENSE PLATE DECALS
As of October 1, 2004, registration decals for passenger vehicles will no longer be required on both the front and rear license plates.  However, commercial vehicles and motorcycle owners will still be required to adhere registration decals to their license plate(s).

NEW VEHICLE REGISTRATION PROGRAM
October 1, 2004, the Motor Vehicle Commission  implemented the Four Year Accelerated Registration Program.   Upon the initial registration of all new vehicles, the owners will be required to make full payment of their registration fee for the four-year period.

The same rule applies for leasing a new vehicle.   Whether you have a 12, 24, or 36 month lease, you will be required to make the full four year registration payment.

Refunds will not be allowed for any unused portion of the four-year registration.  However, an owner may be able to transfer the license plates to a different vehicle for a $4.50 transfer fee, plus any prorated increase due to a change in weight class of the vehicle, such as moving from a sedan to an SUV.

This program, along with the 2002 initiative to extend inspections for new vehicles to four years will enable MVC to coordinate the terms of registrations and inspections.  For example, registrations and inspections for new vehicles purchased after October 1, 2004 will now expire on the same date.
