An Abstract of
The SOUTH JERSEY TRANSPORTATION PLANNING ORGANIZATION (SJTPO) AND THE SOUTH JERSEY TRAFFIC SAFETY ALLIANCE (Alliance) INTEGRATING TRAFFIC SAFETY INTO THE METROPOLITAN AND STATE PLANNING PROCESS.

In 1998, SJTPO teamed with the New Jersey Division of Highway Safety to create the South Jersey Traffic Safety Alliance. The Alliance brings together traffic safety professionals from the fields of law enforcement, rescue, community education, planning and engineering to develop region-wide traffic safety programs, share successful practices, exchange information, and support capital projects geared toward traffic and pedestrian safety.
The paper will look at how the Alliance has helped SJTPO integrate traffic safety into the metropolitan planning process, and how the SJTPO is helping Alliance members address traffic safety problems in their jurisdictions.
1. Selecting locations for a federally-funded project that produced environmental documents for five highway corridors in the region. Since then, Alliance members have reviewed design plans and SJTPO has programmed the construction for sidewalks, and other pedestrian improvements, in its Transportation Improvement Program.
2. Acquiring mobile radar units that can be used by both SJTPO=s member agencies and SJTSA=s member agencies, using federal planning funds.
3. Identifying specific problem locations that may be candidates for more detailed technical studies, currently included in SJTPO's 2025 Regional Transportation Plan.
4. Identifying sidewalks as the greatest safety concern in the region.
5. Facilitating the state=s review of dangerous intersections identified by Alliance members.
6. Using SJTPO=s pedestrian study results to obtain grant funds to implement results.
