The South Jersey Traffic Safety Alliance takes an active part in the legislative process.  Every meeting members review and vote on pending legislation that specifically affects their mission.  Below is a listing of the items previously reviewed and current position.  The items are listed by category.  These are the same categories used on the New Jersey State Legislature's website.  For the current status of these items go to www.njleg.state.nj.us.

Title 13  - letter to DMV regarding school buses.

Human Services - Children

A2805 - Requires scooter riders under 14 year of age to wear a bike helmet.   Supported.

A3271 - Supplemental appropriation of $1 million to DLSP for child car safety public education campaign. Supported

A3273 - Supplemental appropriation of $250,000 to DLSP for child safety seat grant program. Supported.

 

Motor Vehicle - General & Miscellaneous

S1428 - Authorizes flashing rear window brake lights. Opposed.

A402 - Required DMV to expunge driving record information.  Opposed.

A2487 - Requires cell phone use to be noted in traffic accidents.  No position.

 

Motor Vehicles - Drunk Driving

ACR121 - (SCR39) - Memorializes Congress to enact legislation which encourages state to adopt .08% BAC as the legal measure of intoxication.  Supported.

AJR39 - Creates permanent State Drunk Driving Commission.  Supported.

A1041 - Reduces the blood alcohol level at which a person is considered to be guilty of drunk driving from .10% to .08%.  Supported.

A875 - Expands scope of implied consent for BAC testing to include certain underaged drivers.  Supported.

A874 - Established additional penalties for DWI with child as a passenger.   Supported.

A1885 - Requires permanent drivers license suspension for third drunk driving offense.   Tabled.

 

 

Motor Vehicles - Offense

A408 - Established penalties for using a car phone while driving.  Tabled.

S757 - Imposes minimum additional period of suspension for driving while license or registration is revoked.  Opposed.

A3223 - Eestablish driving while fatigued as recklessness under vehicular homicide statute. Supported

 

 

Motor Vehicles - Regulations

A2125 - Amends the Graduated Driver's License (GDL) Law and 10 year drivers license.   Supported.

Motor Vehicles - Traffic Safety

S532 - Exempts certain motorcycle operators from helmet law.  Opposed.

 

Public Safety - General & Miscellaneous

A539 - Requires certain children to wear seat belts in rear motor vehicle seats.   Supported.

A1325 - Permits municipalities and counties to install in-street pedestrian right-of-way signs under State guidelines.  Supported.

A1076 - Requires children riding a tricycle to wear helmets.  Tabled.

AR26 - Urges enforcement of vehicular pursuit policy and an investigation by the Attorney General of pursuits in death or serious injury.  Opposed.

A552 - Regulates the operation of motorized scooters and skateboards.  Supported.

 

Public Safety - Police

A377 - Prohibits the use of unmarked police vehicles for routine traffic stops.   Opposed.
